Job Description

The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks a scientists focused in the area of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). EMSL is a national scientific user facility supported and stewarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) and located at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The EMSL User facility is designed to provide innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses BER programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and computational capabilities. EMSL staff and Users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions.

The candidate will be responsible for aiding in the development and utilization of a MSI suite, which currently includes multiple secondary ion-based, laser-ablation, and extraction-based MSI tools. They will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the instrumentation along with supporting a foundational science program with these capabilities. We have a dynamic, world-class high performance mass spectrometry group and this would be a fantastic opportunity for self-motivated individuals who want to continue learning and developing leading edge technologies and applications. We have a highly integrated work environment and work on many team and collaborative projects across multiple capabilities.

The candidate must have a record of accomplishment in the development and/or applications of MSI modalities, including expertise in mass spectrometry, MSI sample preparation methods, data acquisition, processing and analysis. Candidates with a SIMS and/or instrumental development background are strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate should possess good oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry or related discipline. They must also have direct experience and expertise in at least one MSI related field. Experience in solving or helping as part of a team to solve challenges centered on optimization of SIMS analytical capabilities for geobiological samples is particularly encouraged.
