Job Description

The candidate will assist in the software architecture design, data management, workflows and implementation of a solution and associated analytics to the monumental challenges posed by optimizing electric grid planning in the face of evolving uncertain renewable sources, electric vehicles, and smart loads that are introducing new stochastics and transients the grid has never seen or been designed for. The problem involves O(1020) variables and can only be solved by the next generation of exascale (1018 operations/second) computers that will be delivered early in the next decade. The successful candidate will interact closely with power engineers, optimization experts, and high performance computing specialists that are part of a three-lab (PNNL, ANL, NREL) collaboration being led by PNNL.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a familiarity with parallel programming models such as MPI and OpenMP; familiarity with accelerator programming such as CUDA or OpenCL; and be able to demonstrate a good understanding on how to exploit parallelism at the instruction, thread, multi-core and multi-node level. The candidate should be proficient with modern object oriented languages such as C++ and have experience developing code for a high performance computing environment. Experience with Julia is desired but not required. Familiarity with stochastic optimization methods (including mixed integer programming), power engineering principals is also desired but not required.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited college or university with a track record in publishing scientific research in international peer reviewed journals.
