A postdoctoral position is available for immediate fill in the Applied Synthetic Chemistry Team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). PNNL has a multidisciplinary team of chemists, chemical engineers and materials scientists developing new materials and concepts for energy-related applications. The successful candidate will be involved in projects focused on developing an understanding of solution structure and dynamics within complex mixtures, such as those caused by additives to gasoline or diesel fuel. We are particularly interested in a highly motivated, adaptable, and capable individual with a Ph.D. in Chemistry, having strong NMR skills and demonstrated experience using Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy and Pulse-Gradient Spin Echo NMR techniques. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be to develop and extend strategies for identifying the temperature and pressure dependence of organized structures within complex mixtures.
Skills considered to be a plus, but not essential include synthetic organic or inorganic chemistry skills, experience with NMR maintenance and troubleshooting, or experience with high-pressure systems. Furthermore, the successful candidate will prepare manuscripts for publication, present their work internally and externally at national/international conferences, and be responsible for developing new research areas.
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Chemistry, or a closely related field within the past five years from an accredited university. The candidate must possess demonstrated skills in using complex NMR pulse sequences, with an emphasis on DOSY/PGSE experiments, as well as application of those skills to obtain physical parameters of solutions. Experience with organic, organometallic, or inorganic synthesis, routine upkeep and maintenance of NMR instrumentation, or high-pressure systems, is highly desirable, but not required. The candidate will be expected to utilize characterization techniques, such as NMR, FTIR, and GC-MS/FID, for routine sample measurements. Good written and oral communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively as part of the team are required.
