The Chemical and Biological Process Development Group at PNNL seeks a Graduate Research Associate to assist in the research and development of bioprocesses for the conversion of biomass feedstocks to advanced biofuels and bioproducts.
The incumbent will perform inoculum preparation and bioreactor cultivation of microbes grown on biomass feedstocks for the bench- and pilot-scale production of fuels and chemicals.
The incumbent will also be involved in design of experiments, process analytical technology development, and data reduction, as well as interpretation and communication of results to project engineers and managers. In addition, the incumbent will be involved in writing summary reports and giving formal presentations. Knowledge and skills gained during employment in this position will be widely applicable for bioprocess development across industrial, agricultural, and biopharmaceutical biotechnology sectors.
Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.
Experience and/or classroom training in process analytical technologies (such as near infrared, dielectric, or Raman spectroscopy) and control systems development is required. Experience in MATLAB, LabView, Python, or Visual Basic is desired, as well as basic biotechnology laboratory skills and experience in extraction and purification of DNA and RNA from microbial cultures for genomic and/or transcriptomic sequencing.
Qualifying candidates for this position must have a BS. degree in: chemical or environmental engineering; mechanical engineering with 1 year of bioprocess development experience; or molecular biology or biochemistry with 2 years of experience in bioprocess development that includes operation of bioreactors.
3.0 GPA or higher is preferred
