The Nuclear Engineering and Analysis Group is searching for nuclear engineer who possess an understanding of criticality safety. The position will provide process support and analysis for PNNL laboratory operation and support other criticality projects outside of PNNL.
This position is responsible for interfacing with internal and external customers, presenting research results to the technical community, planning work, developing teams, executing work scope, preparing quality deliverables on time, and managing budgets. Additionally, the incumbent will lead technical decision-making within responsibility area, advising senior project management and developing project proposals for future work. This position will be expected to work with non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as appropriate for individual projects. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with topics related to the National Security of the United States.
Specific responsibilities include:
* Experience using Monte Carlo N-Particle code for shielding and criticality analysis OR SCALE code package for criticality analysis
* Independently completing recurring assignments, exercising limited judgment on work details, and making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives
* Working with project and operations staff to develop operating limits
* Preparing and explaining process criticality safety analysis
* Working on multiple projects concurrently
* Mentoring more junior staff and interns
* Presenting technical research to peer technical community and operations staff
* Being a contributing or lead author on technical reports and design documentation
* The ability to work in a proceduralized environment
Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years experience or a Master's degree with 3 years experience or a PhD with 1-2 years experience.
Must be a skilled professional who applies a broad basis of existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field.
Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering or physics plus 5 years of experience pertaining to criticality safety, preference to candidates with 7 years of experience or advanced degree (MS or PhD) in nuclear engineering or physics plus 3 years of relevant experience, preference to candidates with 5 years of experience. Level will be determined on education and experience.
* Technical Expertise: Skilled professional working on becoming a known technical expert in their field. Applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field.
* Breadth of Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of nuclear engineering and nuclear design is required. Knowledge of commercial nuclear reactor systems and operations is preferred. May direct technical projects that involve multi-disciplinary activities.
* Level of Responsibility: Fully competent in all conventional applications of knowledge common in the specific discipline and function of work assigned. Subject matter expert in nuclear physics codes; leader for major technical tasks; lead author on technical reports and other written or oral deliverables; direct communication with clients within and exterior to PNNL. Will also mentor junior staff and interns to aid in their professional development.
* Business Development: Generates ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Demonstrates ability to acquire internal/external funding for self, and possibly others.
* Technical Products: Primary author or contributor on calculations, technical and regulatory documents, literature publications or reports; presents information to external review groups and papers at national meetings; may present invited papers. May develop intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights and/or patents. May contribute to technology transfer.
