Job Description

A Masters level internship is available in biostatistics and bioinformatics in the Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Group, Biological Sciences Division, at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Located in Richland, WA.

The position involves work with senior scientists in: 1) applying new methods to analyze microbial community composition and the validation of those methods using publicly available and mock community data and 2) developing and implementing proteomics analysis pipelines. The research requires a large component of software development and the application of statistical methods to validate specificity and sensitivity of various existing and novel analysis techniques. The research requires an interdisciplinary approach, designing experiments involving 16S and 18S genomic sequence data and proteomics and the analysis of data using a robust and efficient statistical framework for analysis and ultimately biological interpretation of results. The incumbent will develop skills and knowledge in the application of statistical quality control methods, multinomial statistical data analysis, microbial physiology and biochemistry and microbiology.

In working towards this goal, the successful candidate will be joining multidisciplinary scientific teams with biochemists, bioinformaticians, analytical chemists, microbiologists and statisticians to develop an analytical protocol for the assessment of microbial community composition across, construct proteomics analysis pipelines and code, and aid in the interpretation of statistical results to reach biologically meaningful conclusions. He/she will also have opportunities to have access to state-of-science computational, experimental, and analytical capabilities associated with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE user facility, including supercomputing resources at PNNL.

The intern will be responsible for helping meet project requirements and the writing of manuscripts that describe project work/results. Strong communication and writing skills as well as excellent teaming relationships with experimental scientists are required.
