We are seeking a highly qualified individual to develop and operate trace elemental analysis methods applied to ultrahigh-purity materials. The preferred analytical method is ICP-MS, although expertise in GDMS and SIMS are desirable. PNNL has existing capability in this area, most notably, for characterizing the radiopurity of materials used to fabricate radiation detectors and shielding. We are expanding this capability to include other high purity materials such as ultrapure reagents (acids, solvents) and final product materials (thin film devices, bulk semiconductors).
This position will include both experimental and theoretical studies, with applications including national and homeland security, nuclear nonproliferation, and nuclear material detection and characterization. Both independently and in collaboration with project teams the position will support a range of US government and private clients. The research group seeking to fill this position supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring and next generation nuclear fuel cycles. Projects with the research group range from highly applied projects in support of the U.S. Government to fundamental projects in the areas of nuclear science and novel technology exploration.
Experience in clean room operations and clean chemistry is highly desirable, and experience working with or developing advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation and ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry tools and methods.
A growing record of independent contributions to research programs and possess the ability to interact with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams.
This position will require work with radioactive materials, potentially in Contamination Area Fume Hoods; therefore, strong radiological worker skills are required. Hazards would be those expected in a traditional wet chemistry lab. Safety will be managed through lab safety processes.
BS in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field and 2-3+ years of experience, or MS in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Biochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.
PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.
Clearance Level and/or U.S. Citizenship Required: Must possess the ability to obtain a DOE Q security clearance; candidates with an active Q-clearance are preferred.
