Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is expanding its machine learning and applied statistics research capability to address a wide range of mission areas, such as national and homeland security, energy, and environment. Project work combines statistical analysis, machine learning and application methodologies to solve complex applied problems across various domain spaces. Also of interest for this position is a focus on advanced and emerging statistical methodologies for large-scale (i.e., “big data”) or streaming data analysis that could be applied to various other government agency challenges --- including applications on data from the power grid, climate models, chemistry and/or biology. This requires processing large volumes of data and extracting insights that facilitate the efficient and effective operation of the system under study utilizing statistical expertise and programming skills with big data and computationally intense analyses leveraging R, especially package development and/or experience with Shiny, HADOOP, Rhipe, or Spark.

The fundamental performance expectation is building a research program to bring national and international credibility and recognition to the staff member and PNNL. In addition to technical research, this position offers the opportunity to participate in project management, proposal writing, business development, and publishing.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 0-1 years experience or a Master's degree.

Degree should be in statistics or related field and experience should include the ability to manage research project needs. Fully apply and interpret standard theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies.

Expected to contribute professionally, applying basic theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies to well-defined assignments of limited scope.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD with:

Statistical expertise and programming skills with big data and computationally intense analyses leveraging R, especially package development and/or experience with Shiny, HADOOP, Rhipe or Spark. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability for writing concisely and clearly, are required.

Other Information

This position requires the ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner. Which requires:

* U.S. Citizenship

* Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

* Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
