Job Description

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) in College Park, MD has an undergraduate internship opportunity for one or more students to work with our economics and climate change modeling and analysis team. The intern will continue the development of an emissions data processing system in the R programing environment. Applicants with particularly strong software skills will work on a variety of code development tasks that might include computational, data processing, and/or visualization codes in R, Java, Phython, and/or C++. This opportunity requires data processing and/or programing skills, writing skills, and good personal interaction skills. The position is available for current students only, is a paid internship (hourly), and can potentially continue through summer 2017 and the next school year (contingent upon satisfactory performance). The work location is at University Research Court off of River Road, accessible by University of Maryland-College Park shuttle to/from its main campus. Note that our preferred candidates are from local universities who can work part time during the school year and continue during the summer.

JGCRI houses an interdisciplinary team of researchers dedicated to understanding human and Earth system interactions with an aim towards addressing energy, environment and economic challenges and opportunities in United States and world-wide. One focus of JGCRI’s research program is the continuing development and application of an integrated assessment computer-modeling framework, the Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM), that combines models of: energy and the economy, land-use, agriculture, water, climate, air-pollution, and ecosystems.

JGCRI researchers publish their findings in leading scientific journals and work with US Federal agencies, state governments, industry, foundations, and universities. JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities through prominent roles in science-based integrated assessments of energy and agricultural systems and water resources. The work environment at JGCRI is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges associated with energy, water and environment. Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy and the University of Maryland at College Park.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 3.0.


Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate should have a major in atmospheric sciences, geography, environmental science, computer science, engineering, or related field. Programing background is a strong plus. Experience in programming high-level languages (R or Python a strong plus). Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are necessary.
